Abstract

The simultaneous occurrence of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in the same thyroid gland is extremely rare. It is generally believed that the origins of MTC and PTC are embryologically different. Herein, we report two new cases of concurrent MTC and PTC and review relevant articles in attempt to propose the appropriate diagnostic approaches. We find 2 patients with concurrent MTC and PTC that underwent surgery at our hospital between 2004 and 2008. Preoperative diagnosis of MTC is important because of its aggressiveness, close association with multiple endocrine syndromes and familial history. Although this carcinoma of different cell origin in the same thyroid gland is rare and exact mechanism is not clear, an attention should be given to the possibility of the simultaneous occurrence of MTC and PTC in patients with multiple thyroid nodules.
